Allan and I went shopping last night. He needed new shoes - I needed white cardstock. We had a mission.
And it was just us, he and I, and we don't do that enough. I enjoy the time spent with one of the kids - really getting to know them more, bonding with their personalities...but when one has 3 children, it doesn't always happen.
But we had it last night, and we laughed, and we had fun. We had several conversations. In one I was asking about his whole routine at school from start to finish, including locker stops - everything.
And when we got to lunchtime it occured to me that, ooops, I wonder what he ate that day because we were out of his bread. And he told me that dad made him a sandwich with the homemade bread (not his favorite) and it was so crumbly he could eat it with his lips.
And I found this visual to be so absolutely hilarious - the visual of my boy eating with his lips at middle school, and mentioned that, I hope he didn't really do this. With tears running down my face because I was laughing so hard. And Al, being Al, immediately spun into this spoof of, "My name is Freddy McGurgan and I sit at the round table with my friends and eat my lunch with my lips"
You probably had to be there. But it was a stitch.
And our whole evening was this way.
We talked about how 5 minutes could be long for one thing, but 10 minutes too short for another.
And we talked about how you can always learn, thanks to the lady at the scrapbooking store who helped to validate a lesson I've already been trying to teach.
Al hit it off with the lady at the scrapbook store - and I enjoyed watching.
She overheard us talking about how he spent last Saturday at the Red Cross class, and she wanted to know more.
And from there it went to how Allan takes woodcarving classes - and so has she.
And Al, who sometimes thinks that he knows all that he can possibly know about something - learned that you can always learn something new - no matter if you've studied it before.
And so on
And he learned
And we had fun
And we still didn't find shoes - so we have to go out again today......
Just me and Freddy McGurgan, our new family joke.
