working through our weekend photos -
On Sunday we went to Mackinac Island.
The last time I was there was 16/17 years ago. It's just like I remembered it.
Three years ago I had won two tickets for the Shepler's Ferry, so it was fun to finally be able to use them. Proud of myself for not losing them in that three years AND for remembering to take them with us. Go me!
We LOVED the close up view of the bridge.
Wendy was wishing she had brought a pony tail holder.
We had debated on going Saturday or Sunday, and ended up going on Sunday for two reasons.
1. My mom's knee had been bothering her, so that gave it an extra day to feel better
2. In my mind, I was thinking that Sunday might not be as busy as Saturday.
I don't know what Saturday was like, but it never felt crowded on Sunday. It was very pleasant.
Makes me wish I knew how to manage a flower garden. My neighbor is bringing me some flowers tomorrow that, quote, are near impossible to kill. She knows me well.
We took the carriage tour (which I highly recommend) and included the butterfly house on our tour. The butterflies landed on everyone but me. One did land on my camera lens, but it was impossible to photograph that.
The tour is split into two sections - the first carriage went through the historic part of town, near the Grand Hotel and brought us to the butterfly house and carriage museum. After that we hopped on another carriage for the second part of our tour.
The tour guide in the above photo was our guide for the second part of our tour. He was Awesome. I've listened to a lot of tour guides in my life, and he was a favorite. I kept wishing Greg was along, because he would have absorbed so much more than I'm capable of. This guy knew his stuff and was excellent at sharing it.
Look how brave my mom is standing there at the rail with my children!
We'll just not talk about how not brave my mom was when we ate here. But my kids might tell you.
The food here was very good. I had no problem paying for it, unlike the food we'd gotten the day before in Petoskey - but that's another post.
And let me rephrase that - as I DID have a problem paying for it in the sense that it took them For.Ev.Er. to bring out my bill - to the point that I told my mom and the kids to just go ahead and go through the fort and I'll wait. And I waited. And I waited. And I put my feet up on another chair and I waited some more. I confess to giving a much smaller tip than I would have because I hated that I was left waiting that long, especially when I was asked several times if I'd like more lemonade and I kept saying - no, but I'd like the bill.
I can lean towards passive aggressive. True story.
The bill finally paid, I caught up with my kids.
He's not my easiest to photograph, and in my mind I was thinking if I get one that I like - I can use it for his first grade photo. Frustrated with his non expressive stares, I told him to smile like he just saw Mrs. K (his preschool teacher) This is what I got.
So we got to the island at about 10:15 am and we left at about 5:30, but before we left we took the kids to the shopping district for a promised trinket.
It was a good full day.
Back in Mackinaw City, we supported the newly opened Starbucks (so says the sign) and headed back to Boyne. Tired, but thankful that we had such a great day and great weather.
And then we swam.
